Advantages and disadvantages of two stroke cycle engine over four stroke cycle engine

 In two stroke engine working cycle is completed in two strokes of the piston or a revolution of the crankshaft and in four stroke engine working cycle is completed in four strokes of piston or in two revolution of crankshaft.

Advantages and disadvantages of two stroke over four stroke cycle engine

• Advantages:

1. At the same engine speed two stroke cycle engine gives twice the number of power stroke than the four stroke cycle engine. Theoretically, a two stroke cycle engine should develop twice the power as that of four stroke cycle engine.
2. For the same power development two stroke cycle engine is lighter less bulky and occupies left floor area.
3. Two stroke cycle engine gives higher mechanical efficiency then four stroke cycle engine because it has a lighter flywheel.

• Disadvantages:

1. The efficiency of two stroke cycle engine is less than four stroke cycle engine because two stroke cycle engine has less compression ratio than that of four stroke cycle engine.
2. Overall efficiency of two stroke cycle engine is less than four stroke cycle engine.
